Why are there ads on this site?

Since this was a tough decision for me, I wanted to share with you why I decided to go this route with my website.  There are advertisements on my website now, and some affiliate links and other things will be showing up here and there.

Here’s why:

  1. Designer wages have not increased since the 1980s.The average cost of a pattern hasn’t increased much in the last thirty years whereas the cost of living has sky rocketed.  Unless you are very well known, very popular, or have been doing it a long time, you’re not going to make enough to be a full-time professional.  For some people this isn’t a big deal because designing is their side business, something they do while the kids sleep, or simply a hobby.  Right now designing is my only job and I’m not making enough money to even cover the material costs of creating patterns or hosting this website based on only pattern sales.
  2. It frees me up to do other things to share with you.By having multiple revenue streams, I’m freed from having to constantly be working on the next design. This gives me  the time to make other content for this site like tutorials, reviews, and YouTube videos.
  3.  It lets me offer some of my work for free.Lastly, it allows me to share some of my patterns for free.  Sometimes I make something that’s simple just for the fun of it that I want to share with you all. As a professional designer, by rights I should put it in a PDF and offer it for sale but that’s just not that fun for me.  For one thing, making a pattern is a lot of work, it can take upwards of six weeks or more from concept to publishing one of my paid patterns.  Sometimes I just want to give you the pattern right away without all the pomp and circumstance. Plus, it allows those who can’t afford to buy my patterns a chance to still have fun with some of my designs.

My Promise

While being able to put food on the table and keep the lights on is important, I can promise you that no single, link, or review would be able to pay me more than my self respect and reputation is worth.  My promise to you is that I will always do my very best to make advertisements tasteful and relevant.  I will only post affiliate links to products that I think are worthwhile and/or interesting (because sometimes stuff is just too crazy not to share).  I will always do my best to keep ads from being annoying both in appearance and location.  I will never, ever try to trick you into clicking something you don’t want to see.  I also promise that I won’t neglect to share with you just because it won’t make me any money.
