I made this little cookie known in the UK as a “jammy dodger” to go along with a Doctor Who themed gift for a friend.  The pattern is super simple but I wanted to share it for fans who might like to make their own.  Even if you’re not a fan of the show, this little pattern would make a great fun food item for kids.  You can try different colors of yarn for the filling.  It only takes a few yards of each color so this would be a great way to use up scraps, too.

Tools & Materials:

Size G (4 mm) crochet hook
Worsted weight yarn in cookie (CC) and (JC) jam colors.

Abbreviations

hdc = US half double crochet
sl st = slip stitch
st = stitch
ch = chain
*…* = Repeat instructions between the specified number of times

Pattern Notes

This pattern is crocheted in rounds which means you will chain to increase height at the start of a new round but you will not turn your work.  The chain counts as the first hdc of the next round. Use a stitch marker to help you keep track of the start of the round so you’ll know where to slip stitch into to close the round.

Pattern Gauge

Since the cookie is the size of a gauge swatch I’ll just say the total cookie is approximately 3″ diameter. Gauge is not critical, but if you are worried, make the cookie bottom first. If it curls in a lot your gauge is too tight, if it ends up wavy on the edges your gauge is too loose. You want to crochet so that you make a relatively flat circle.

Cookie Top

The first round is done in the Jam Color, then subsequent rounds are done in the Cookie Color.  By crocheting into the front loops on Round 2, it will cause the middle of the cookie to indent, looking like a cut out hole with jam underneath.  Doing so may cause the cookie portion to flip up but don’t worry, when you assemble the cookie you will sew it to be flat.  I chose to do it this way rather than just making an opening because it gives a nicer finished look.

Round 1: With JC, make 6 hdc in a magic ring. Sl st in top of first hdc to close the ring.  Break yarn, leaving a tail to weave in and pull through last stitch.
Round 2: Join CC in front loop.  *2 HDC  in front loop*  each st around. Sl st in top of first HDC. (12  sts)
Round 3: ch 2, hdc in same st, hdc in next st, *2 hdc in next st, hdc in next st* 5 times.  Sl st in top of ch 2 (18 sts)
Round 4: ch2, hdc in same st, hdc in next two sts, *2 hdc in next st, hdc in next 2 sts* 5 times. Sl st in top of ch 2 (24 times)

Break yarn and pull through last stitch. Weave in all ends being sure to pull the magic ring tightly closed.

Round 3: ch 2, hdc in same st, hdc in next st, *2 hdc in next st, hdc in next st* 5 times  Sl st in top of ch 2 (18 sts)

Jam Filling

Since the first round of the  Cookie Top will bump down, we need to make a ring, not a circle, or it will be too thick in the middle.  We will do this by doing the same number of stitches as round two for the cookie pieces as our first round of the Jam Filling so there will be an opening in the middle.

Round 1: With JC, make 12 hdc in a magic ring. Sl st. in top of first hdc.
Round 2: ch 2, hdc in same st, hdc in next st, *2 hdc in next st, hdc in next st* 5 times  Sl st in top of ch 2  (18 sts)
Round 3: ch2, hdc in same st, hdc in next two sts, *2 hdc in next st, hdc in next 2 sts* 5 times  Sl st in top of ch 2  (24 times)

Break yarn and pull through last stitch.   Adjust the hole in the magic ring so that the spot of jam in the Cookie Top will fit neatly in the hole and the jam filling fits between the two cookies. Weave in all ends.

Assembly

Stack the two Cookie pieces with wrong sides facing and the Jam Filling between aligned around the bump in the Cookie Top.  Using a long scrap of CC, sew through all three layers around the outer edge of the cookie to secure. Weave in  any remaining ends and you’re done!

Here’s my cookie with the Christmas Ood I made from this charming pattern by Makayla Yager.
